Running a multi-pet household without the chaos

Sharing care · 2 min read
Two dogs, three cats, and a few chickens can each have different food, meds, and schedules. A clear system keeps everyone fed and nobody forgotten.

The problem with "the pets"

In a multi-pet home, care tends to get thought about as one job: "feed the pets". But each animal has its own needs. One cat is on a prescription diet, one dog gets a pill with breakfast, and the senior gets a softer food. Treating them as a group is how the wrong bowl ends up in front of the wrong animal.

Give every animal its own plan

Write down each pet's food, amount, times, medications, and any special instructions separately. It sounds like extra work, but it's the only way a sitter or a family member can get it right without asking.

Separate feeding

Many multi-pet homes feed animals in separate spots or rooms, especially when one is on a special diet or eats faster than the others. Pick up bowls after meals so nobody finishes someone else's. For cats, feeding stations at different heights can help.

Stagger and batch routines

Group tasks that happen at the same time, such as all breakfasts at 7:00, but keep them listed per animal so each one gets checked off. That way, if someone is interrupted halfway through, it's obvious which pet still needs feeding.

Watch the group dynamics

Tension between pets often shows up around food, doorways, and resting spots. Make sure each animal has a safe space, enough litter boxes for cats (a common guideline is one per cat plus one extra), and that no one is being blocked from food or water.

Make it visible

With JotAboutMe, each pet has its own profile and its own jots. The board shows what's due and what's done for every animal, and you can filter to one pet to see its history. When something is off with one animal, a note on that pet's jot keeps the details with the right animal.
Put this into practice with JotAboutMe
A shared board for every pet: repeating jots for meals and medications, reminders at the right time, and a record of who did what. Free for your household.
